Roger Wheelahan, principal at IFD Financial Planning, our in-house financial planning team, joins us to go through the May 2026 budget changes one by one. We recorded this in late September, while a lot of it is still in draft legislation, so think of it as a snapshot of where things stand right now and what we're telling clients to do about it.
We start with the change doctors have called about the most, the new 30% tax on family trusts. Roger explains what the government is actually trying to stop, why the latest draft lets you fix a beneficiary once, and why that means bucket companies aren't dead after all. He also walks through how a bucket company really works, why no one can own a trust, and how he structures his own businesses.
Then we get into capital gains tax and the move back to the indexation method. Roger breaks down why there will be two calculations, why so many properties will need a valuation on 1 July 2027, and what share price counts on the day. He shares how one IFD client hedged their trust and bucket company ahead of the changes, why share portfolios are looking more favourable than property right now, and why the first question is always who owns the asset.
If you've got a family trust, a bucket company or an investment portfolio and you're not sure whether to act yet, start here.
